GRPD Receives Reports of Spoofing Scam

Grand Rapids Police Department is warning residents of a spoofing scam, in which calls appear to be coming from a legitimate police agency phone number.

Police say they've received reports that people have been getting calls from someone who identifies themselves as being with GRPD, tells the person answering the call that they have an outstanding warrant, and they need to pay a fine or they will be arrested.

GRPD reminds residents that the police will never call and ask for, or demand, payment over the phone for any reason.

If you receive one of these calls, please call the Grand Rapids Police Department non-emergency line at (616) 456-3400, or contact your local law enforcement agency if you are not in the City of Grand Rapids, to make a report.

How to Know If You're Getting Scammed

The Michigan Attorney General's Office offers these 13 signs someone is trying to scam you, including:

You're contacted Contacted out of the blue with an urgent request.
You're Pressured to act or respond immediately.
You're urged urged to keep the call secret.
You're asked provide personal or financial information.
You're asked for money, especially in the form of pre-paid debit cards.

Remember to never give personal or financial information to an unsolicited caller or email.
