Spot a Stranger in Your Yard? GRPD Warns of Suspicious Activity

Grand Rapids Police say they have received multiple calls about recent door-to-door solicitations that made residents feel unsafe.

Solicitors are repeatedly entering yards without permission and have been seen taking pictures of home owners' properties.

At this time, it is unknown if these solicitors are involved in criminal activity. However, police are warning about popular door-to-door scams, such as fake contractor repairs, home inspections, security systems, and pest or yard services.

The goal of these scams it to get residents to sign up for services that don't exist and pay up front. Scammers may try to steal items discreetly while in the house or distract residents while another person slips in and steals. It's possible the person may also be casing the home for a future break-in. They could also be after personal information to steal residents' identities.

Police say if you speak with a solicitor and are interested in what they're offering, you should take a few extra steps to make sure it's legit:

• Ask to see their active city business license and confirm with the city licensing department.
• Verify salesperson's identity through an ID and by calling the relevant office in your area.
• Do your research - look up the company online and the better business bureau.

Police warn residents to stay alert and share information with neighbors as well.
