Grand Rapids Park Getting New Butterfly Garden, Hammock Grove
We've seen a lot of cool upgrades to Grand Rapids parks in the past few years - and the latest park makeover sounds really unique!
Butterfly Garden, Hammock Grove Coming to Briggs Park in Grand Rapids
The City of Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation Department announced that Briggs Park at 324 Knapp St NE is getting a new butterfly garden, hammock grove, and picnic area in 2022.
The new additions are on top of upgrades made in 2019, which included improvements to the pathways and playgrounds.
Brigg's Park currently features:
- Basketball Court
- Free Public Wifi
- Picnic Area
- Picnic Shelter
- Shade Areas
- Swimming Pool
- Tennis Courts
And soon, a new interactive, functional installation, named "Connections". According to GR Parks and Rec:
The garden will feature tall wooden structures painted in bright colors that will function as public art, hammock posts, and places for caterpillars to build their chrysalides. A group of volunteers will plant native pollinator species in the center of the space.
Brigg's Park upgrades are expected to be completed in summer 2022.
Where Does Funding Come From for Grand Rapids' Park Projects?
In 2013, Grand Rapids residents voted to approve a millage that provides repair, rehab, and new improvements to City parks, pools, and playgrounds.
Each year, the GR Parks Department chooses several parks in the city to receive upgrades. Over the course of the 7-year millage, the goal is to improve every park in Grand Rapids. You can see the full parks plan here.
In December, Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation director David Marquardt provided an update on recently completed, current, and upcoming park improvement projects.
Do You Have Ideas for Grand Rapids City Park Improvements?
