New Childcare Center Opens at Rapid Bus Station

Finding affordable child care can be super challenging for many West Michigan families. The new center in downtown Grand Rapids is hoping to ease that burden, especially for parents who rely on public transportation.

City and community leaders recently marked the ribbon cutting for the new Early Childhood Center at The Rapid’s Central Station downtown.

A Transit-Based Child Care Model

Supporters say the project is designed around a simple goal: making child care more accessible by placing it directly inside the city’s main transit hub.

The center is located at 250 Grandville Ave. SW, right inside Grand Rapids’ Central Station. Families who use The Rapid will be able to drop off their kids and continue their commute from the same location. The site is accessible via 16 bus lines and one rapid transit line, making it especially convenient for those who rely on public transportation.

The project is backed by a long list of partners, including the WK Kellogg Foundation, YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids, The Rapid, Grand Rapids Public Schools, Head Start for Kent County, and the Grand Rapids Downtown Development Authority.

Addressing a Growing Child Care Shortage

It also comes as demand continues to outpace supply. Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. says the city needs more than 7,300 additional child care spaces to meet current need.

When it opens in September, the center will serve up to 100 children, from infants as young as six weeks old through age 5. That includes eight classrooms, indoor and outdoor play spaces, and wraparound family support services.

The facility will use the HighScope curriculum, a play-based learning model focused on hands-on learning, exploration, and problem-solving at each child’s pace.

Families can already apply for enrollment through the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids.
