Man Found Dead in Dumpster on 28th Street in Wyoming

UPDATE 3 p.m.: Police have identified the deceased person as Joseph Otis Hammer. His family has been identified.

Police are investigating after a 38-year-old Wyoming man was found dead inside a dumpster Saturday night on 28th Street SW.

According to a release from the city, it happened just after 9:20 p.m. on June 28, when Wyoming Fire Department crews were called to a construction site in the 1300 block of 28th Street SW for a reported dumpster fire.

When crews arrived, they didn’t find any active flames or any clear signs that a fire had taken place. While checking the area, firefighters came across a walk-in style dumpster and found a man inside.

Fire crews went into the dumpster and tried life-saving efforts, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Wyoming Police Department is still working to figure out what led up to the death. At this point, investigators do not believe foul play was involved.

The Kent County Medical Examiner’s Office has completed an autopsy, but the official cause and manner of death are still pending.
