
Car Thefts Surge in Grand Rapids: Police Urge Action
The temperatures are on the rise and so are car thefts and break-ins in West Michigan.
Just this week, I've seen several people reporting vehicle thefts in my Alger Heights neighborhood Facebook discussion group. Windows are getting smashed and valuables taken—but not just that. At least on neighbor says their car was stolen right off the street in front of their house.

It's especially worrying to me as my mom is staying with us. I worry for my own safety and my husband's—but even more so for hers.

We've even developed a strategy where she parks in the garage and I in the driveway, since my car is older and I feel like thieves are less likely to find it desirable... Isn’t it sad that we have to take these precautions?

And it's not just my neighborhood. The Kent County Sheriff's Office is warning residents that vehicle larcenies are on the rise in the Grand Rapids area. They say even if your car is locked, windows are being smashed to get at valuables.

Police are on alert and ready to catch thieves, but they need our help. KCSO offers these tips to make yourself less of a target:
• Lock your vehicles
• Remove valuables
• Shut and lock garages
• Leave exterior lights on
• Report suspicious activity immediately
