Bosco Sticks: A Michigan Invention
In digging into the history of these ooey-gooey, cheese-stuffed bread sticks, I learned something new! Maybe you were already aware... but Bosco Sticks originated in Michigan!
History of Bosco Sticks
Even though Bosco Sticks caught on as a favorite in school cafeterias, they actually got their start at a Warren, Mich., restaurant. According to Eater, in 1988 Mark Artinian founded Bosco’s Carry-Out Pizzeria in Warren, right near a high school.

As many of his patrons were students, he realized schools were lacking high-quality pizza (not knocking the rectangular slices they served at my school—any pizza is good pizza—but it definitely wasn't restaurant quality.) Eventually Artinian closed the restaurant and transformed the business into a food-distribution service. In 1995 the business launched the first commercially made stuffed-crust pizza, which is how the Bosco Stick came to be! It was an accident really. According to Bosco Sticks website:
In 1995, the Bosco’s brand launched its frozen stuffed-crust pizza. Then one day, the crust fell off and, voila, baked bready magic was left for everyone to love. The stuffed breadstick was thankfully born. So, we took the original crust and made it better. We filled it with the good stuff, but kept the love, care and perfect ingredients that make the stuffed sticks so sensational.
So they're basically, a deconstructed, hand-held pizza.
In 2014, the company was acquired by Tyson Foods. Now Bosco Sticks are served as school lunch in more than 40 states! You can also find them at grocery stores.
What Makes Bosco Sticks Different From Regular Breadsticks?
The company says they're made with an authentic bread baking process. That's what creates the soft, fresh-baked texture and flavor. Plus they're stuffed with cheese and other delicious fillings!
