They're calling it a "road diet", in which a street is slimmed down to fewer lanes. Plainfield Avenue, for example went from four full lanes for cars only, to three lanes, including a turn lane in the middle and bike lanes on the side.

Alpine Avenue may be next, say city traffic manager Christopher Zull, according to WZZM-13.

The portion of Alpine being discussed runs from Leonard to Ann Street. The area, north of Richmond, has recently been resurfaced.

The physical width of the road would not change--  just the way the lanes are painted.

Officials are considering the "diet" to improve traffic flow and safety, and to promote biking. The change is expected to reduce crashes by 30 percent.
