The ArtPrize organization produces open citywide contemporary art experiences that encourage critical discourse, celebrate artists, transform urban space and promote cultural understanding. Project 1 is the next evolution of ArtPrize, the first in a series of citywide, community-oriented public art commissions to take place between biennial ArtPrize competitions. Featured on Saturday will be Blue Bridge Amplified Featuring Dan Deacon from 8:00-10:00 pm. Don’t miss an unforgettable evening of light, sound and community at this one-night-only performance. Electronic beat-maker and headliner, Dan Deacon, and an array of local artists will take over Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s Voice Bridge, activating the sound system and 400+ lights that will traverse Grand Rapids’ iconic Blue Bridge. Founders will be there with multiple styles of beer, Grey Skies will be providing their kegged cocktail, and Hopcat will be debuting their new funnel cake fries along with their famous Cosmik fries.

WMEAC is proud to host the 16th Annual Mayors' Grand River Cleanup. There will be a light refreshments before the event and a light lunch after with a refreshments area (must be 21+, ID required) supplied by Founders Brewery and Cascade Blonde. Small Acts make Grand Impact! Why do we clean the river? The Grand River is a vital part of the West Michigan community. We fish, play, and celebrate the Grand River throughout the year, but it only takes 15-30 minutes for trash on our streets and around storm drains to find its way to the Grand River. Pollution in rivers harms plants, fish, and wildlife and negatively impacts drinking water quality, scenic beauty, and recreational value. The Grand River empties into Lake Michigan, where we get our drinking water. The waste that is removed at the 16th Annual Mayors’ Grand River Cleanup is a small act that has a grand impact on our community.

The 2019 Grand Rapids 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb is a way to honor and remember the FDNY firefighters, police, and EMS who selflessly gave their lives so that others might live on 9-11-2001. Each participant pays tribute to an FDNY firefighter, police officer, or EMS by climbing the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. Your individual tribute not only remembers the sacrifice of an FDNY brother, but symbolically completes their heroic journey to save others. Through firefighter and community participation we can ensure that each of the 343 firefighters, 60 police officers, and 10 EMS are honored and that the world knows that we will never forget.
