Yooper Approved: Where to Get the Best Pasties
There’s one place in Michigan where pasties are taken very seriously: the Upper Peninsula. Yoopers recently shared their favorite spots to grab a pasty throughout the U.P.
What Is a Pasty?

If you know Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, you know pasties are a big deal. This hearty, handheld pastry is traditionally filled with ground beef, potatoes, onions, and rutabaga. These days, you’ll also find plenty of twists on the classic, including versions with carrots, chicken, breakfast fillings, or even vegetarian options.

I like to eat my pasty plain, but people have their own way of enjoying one. Up in the U.P., some people swear by ketchup, while folks south of the Mackinac Bridge are more likely to smother theirs in gravy.

Where to Find the Pasties Yoopers Love

Someone on the Yooper subreddit recently shared photos of enjoying a pasty with an incredible Upper Peninsula view in the background. That sparked a conversation, and locals quickly chimed in with their favorite ways to eat a pasty and where they go to get the best ones.

Whether you’re heading to the U.P. for a fall colors, hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, off-roading, or just to take in the scenery, don’t forget to grab a pasty while you’re there. It’s the perfect way to put an exclamation point on your U.P. adventure!

The takeaway is that folks from the Lower Peninsula might be missing out by only grabbing their pasties near the Mackinac Bridge. There are plenty of pasty options to discover once you venture farther into the U.P.

The next time I visit my buddy in Iron River, I’ll have plenty of pasty stops to make along the way. Sounds like I’ll be stocking up as I make my way across the U.P.

Lawry’s received several shoutouts in the thread, along with a few other pasty spots. Some people even shared their own tips and recipes for making pasties at home.
