The shaky ground that college football stands on for the upcoming season just got a little shakier when one league canceled its entire season, impacting Western Michigan's home opener.

Western Michigan was forced to cancel its opening game of the college football season when its opponent, Stony Brook, decided to cancel its entire season due to the coronavirus.

The game was scheduled to be played Saturday, September 4 at Waldo Stadium in Kalamazoo.

“As a result of the CAA’s decision, our 2020 season opener will not be played as previously scheduled,” WMU athletic director Kathy Beauregard said in a statement. “As the Mid-American Conference stated so well last week, we will continue with all due caution for the health and well-being of the student-athletes, coaches and others involved as well as following the guidance of the MAC’s COVID-19 Medical Advisory Panel, Council of Presidents and the NCAA’s Resocialization of College Sports Guidelines.”

The Big Ten, which includes Michigan and Michigan State, has already announced they will not play non-conference games this fall.

Western is still planning to go ahead with the rest of their schedule, beginning September 11 at Cincinnati.
