Michigan Pizza Joint Declared ‘Legendary’ and ‘Must-Try’ By Midwest Living
Michigan is no stranger to great pizza. The state has long punched above its weight in the pizza world, helping shape national chains like Little Caesars, Domino’s, Hungry Howie’s, Jet’s Pizza, and Buddy’s Pizza.

It is also the birthplace of Detroit-style pizza, a square, pan-bkaed style that has exploded in popularity far beyond the state’s borders.
Midwest Living Names Its Top Pizza Spots
With that kind of reputation, narrowing down the best pizza spots in the Midwest is no easy task. Midwest Living acknowledges the challenge, writing:
This year, we introduced a pizza category to our Best of the Midwest Awards—and then immediately recognized the impossibility of the task. Pizza is so subjective.
Still, the publication set out to do it anyway, evaluating spots based on quality and variety before naming its Top 12 Pizza Restaurants in the Midwest. The list highlights places described as “legendary” and “must-try,” known for being consistently excellent and deeply loved in their local communities.
A Michigan favorite made the cut.
Before revealing which one, it is worth noting this is not the first time the restaurant has earned statewide attention. It was also recently named the best pizza spot in Michigan by Chowhound.
Detroit Pizza Joint Honored By Midwest Living
That Michigan standout is Michigan & Trumbull in Detroit.
The restaurant’s story actually stretches beyond Detroit, and it starts with a search for familiar flavor. Detroit natives Nathan Peck and Kristen Calverley originally launched Michigan & Trumbull in Pittsburgh in December 2017. At the time, they could not find pizza that reminded them of home, so they began making their own Detroit-style pies. What started as a personal craving quickly turned into a growing reputation for high-quality, creative pizza.

In January 2020, they brought the concept back to Detroit, opening the restaurant at 1331 Holden St. inside the "Dreamtroit" development.
Today, Michigan & Trumbull is known for its square pan pizzas with crisp, caramelized edges and a balance of traditional and inventive toppings. The menu includes classic red-sauce pies along with white-sauce options and seasonal combinations that push boundaries without losing the Detroit-style foundation.
Midwest Living praises that mix of tradition and creativity, along with the restaurant’s connection to Detroit history, noting:
The restaurant is named for the storied intersection where the Detroit Tigers first played, and the pizzas have the most perfectly caramelized cheesy edges. Opt for red sauce (Packard Pepperoni with pickled peppers and hot honey) or white (Cadieux e Pepe with garlic and fresh-cracked pepper). There are no wrong answers here.
