But beyond the chains, the state is home to pizzerias that have earned devoted followings for perfecting the classic square slice.

Previously spots like The Original Buscemi's and Supino Pizzeria have been called the pizza joints in Michigan... now another restaurant is up for the honor.

According to Chowhound, Michigan's best pie is served at Michigan & Trumbull in Detroit's Corktown neighborhood.

With around 300 pies baked each day, this popular Detroit-style pizzeria proves that consistency, quality, and creative toppings make a winning combination.

The story behind Michigan & Trumbull is interesting too! And speaks to the connection folks have to Detroit-Style Pizza. Detroit natives Nathan Peck and Kristen Calverley actually opened up Michigan & Trumbull in Pittsburgh in Dec. 2017. They couldn't find any pies that reminded them of home, so they started to make their own. Quickly, they established a reputation for excellent pizza. In January 2020, the opportunity came up to move back home and they took it! The restaurant is located at 1331 Holden St. in the "Dreamtroit" development.

Every Michigan & Trumbull pizza starts with fresh dough baked in traditional square pans, creating a golden, crispy-edged crust. The menu balances classic favorites with inventive options. Seriously, some of the specials use toppings I'd never think to put on a pizza—but they look delicious! You'll find items like almond, spring peas, peaches, and roasted cauliflower.

Of course, there's always good old pepperoni and other classic toppings like olives, mushrooms and peppers.

According to Chowhound, one standout is the Farnsworth Funghi, a white pizza featuring roasted mushrooms, arugula, whipped goat cheese, mozzarella, and a drizzle of garlic oil—a perfect example of Detroit-style pizza with a modern twist.

For anyone looking for a standout pizza experience in Michigan, Chowhound says Michigan & Trumbull is a must-visit.
