Reaching grandfather-hood is already a milestone, but doing so at 91, and setting a world record in the process, is nearly unheard of.

The Oldest a Man Can Father a Child

The oldest confirmed father on record is Australian Les Colley, who was 92 years and 10 months old when his ninth child was born in July 1992. While there have been other reported cases of men fathering children at ages 96 or even 101, Colley’s case remains the officially recognized record.

The average age of American fathers at the time of their child’s birth has risen to about 30.9 years. That’s an increase of roughly three years since 1972. Today, around 9% of new fathers are over 40, and nearly 1% are over 50, clear signs of a shift toward later fatherhood. Much of this trend is tied to economic changes and the growing reality of when raising a child becomes financially feasible.

At 91, He Meets His First Grandchild, A New Record

According to WZZM, a new world record has been set for the oldest first-time grandfather. Australia’s 91-year-old Charles Smith reached the milestone when his 55-year-old son, Ashley Smith, and daughter-in-law, Hanna, welcomed their daughter, Isla, on August 29, 2025.

Smith’s son and daughter-in-law, Hanna, added a special surprise by quietly submitting an application to Guinness World Records, making his new title as the record holder official.
