97.9 GRD Rocks will host the fourth annual WGRD Pond Hockey Classic, presented by Labatt Blue and Dematic.

More than 40 teams will play on the frozen surface at Richmond Park in Grand Rapids starting Friday night (Jan. 23) and running through Sunday, Jan. 25. Division finals will be the afternoon of Jan. 25.

Teams of six to eight players, 21 years of age or older, will compete in 4-on-4 games. The rinks, measuring 120’ feet long by 60 feet wide, will be built using water, shovels, small plows and wood frames.

In 2014, the tournament featured 40 teams, with more than 250 players from across Michigan taking part.

The entry fee to participate is $375 per team. The entry deadline is January 18, 2015.

The WGRD Pond Hockey Classic’s opening ceremonies will take place at 5:45 p.m. EST Friday.

The warming tent will feature great Labatt specials, games, prizes and music from 97.9 WGRD. There will also be food available.

On Jan. 25, the annual WinterWest festival, organized by Friends of Grand Rapids Parks and Welcome West, takes over the Richmond Park hill. The WinterWest Crazy Cardboard Sled Competition, presented by Grand Rapids Public Schools, is 2 p.m. EST.

That will be followed by WGRD Pond Hockey Classic finalists going head-to-head at 3 p.m. to decide divisional champions.

Richmond Park is located at 1637 Tamarack Ave NW in Grand Rapids.
