New West Michigan Scam: Strange Gifts With QR Codes
During the holiday season, people are constantly ordering packages full of gifts for the family. Half the time you're getting so many, you're not even really paying attention to what you're ordering.
While many people are looking to spread Christmas cheer this time of year, there is a group of scammers looking to do the opposite. While one of your presents may look like a lucky gift on the surface, it isn't what it appears.

Say "NO" To The Ring
My dad's coworker came into work the other day with a package they were confused about and wanted to get advice on. The item was a ring in a ring box, and the ring box had a sheet of paper with a QR code on it encouraging her to scan the code for information.
The QR code can be scanned with your phone camera and will direct you to a website. However, that is exactly what the scammers want you to do. But this will download malware onto your device and steal your information, according to FOX 17.

Their goal in sending such a peculiar package is to pique your interest and scan the QR code to learn more about why this ring or other item appeared. Other residents have reported getting a diamond ring and a digital picture frame.
How To Stay Safe
Unlike Christmas morning when you have no idea what is inside the box, generally, you know exactly what you're ordering these days. If you get something you know you didn't order, discard it.
If you did scan the QR code:
- Change passwords and information
- Freeze your linked accounts and contact your bank and credit card company
- Help make others aware of the scam by reporting it to the Better Business Bureau's Scam Tracker.
