Urgent: Allegan County Power Outage Hits Thousands This Weekend

Unplanned Power Outages

Severe weather, including high winds, ice storms, and lightning, can bring down tree branches and damage power lines, while animals, equipment failures, and other unexpected issues can also interrupt electrical service. Although the causes vary, power outages are sometimes unavoidable.

Unexpected power outages can result in spoiled food, failed sump pumps, and interruptions to life-sustaining medical equipment. These same risks can also occur during planned outages if residents are not given adequate notice to prepare.

Planned Outage Will Affect Thousands in Allegan County

According to FOX 17, nearly 3,000 Allegan County customers will be affected by a planned Consumers Energy power outage this weekend. The utility is temporarily shutting off power while crews upgrade a substation to improve the reliability of this section of the electric grid.

Consumers Energy will begin the planned outage at 11 p.m. on Saturday, July 11, with power expected to be fully restored by 6 a.m. on Sunday, July 12. Below is a list of the areas that will be affected by the temporary outage.

From Lake Macatawa south to Castle Park and east from Castle Park to I-196.
South and west of I-196 to Gibson, north to 142nd Avenue
From 142nd Avenue east of Gilligan Lake north to 144th Avenue
In Holland, the affected areas include locations north and south of 32nd Avenue, extending from 2nd Avenue on the west to 61st Street on the east, and reaching as far south and west as 146th Avenue.

Consumers Energy mailed notices to customers about the planned outage, but some residents may still be unaware. If you know a senior citizen or someone with medical needs, consider checking on them to make sure they are prepared. If you rely on a generator, ensure it has make sure it has enough fuel before the outage begins. Homeowners with refrigerators or freezers should also have a plan to keep food from spoiling during the overnight outage.
