Old Man Winter is here and causing lots of slide-offs and crashes. There has been a 100-car pileup on westbound I-196 at 32nd Avenue near Hudsonville.

Let's face it, driving in the winter can suck, especially during a snow storm when the temperatures are low. That is what West Michigan is dealing with at this time. Cold temperatures, blowing snow, ice, and low visibility, which is not a good mix for driving.

Over the weekend snow and ice were creating problems on West Michigan roads. Some areas near Grand Rapids received 4-5 to 5-10 inches in 24 hours. There is a winter storm warning still in effect until 7 a.m. Tuesday morning.

With more snow falling on Monday, 1-3 inches on Tuesday, and 1-3 inches on Wednesday, West Michigan roads will continue to stay hazardous, so don't drive unless you have to.

According to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office, at 10:19 a.m. on January 19, 2026, numerous calls came in regarding crashes and slide-offs in the area. Those calls turned into a 100-multi-car pile-up, where there were several jack-knifed semi-trucks. There were injuries reported, but no deaths as a result from accidents.

The highway is closed in both directions between the Hudsonville exit of I-196 (62) and the Zeeland exit of I-196 (55). The Michigan State Police are encouraging drivers to avoid this portion of the freeway, and to travel only when necessary.

Here's a look at what it was like on the inside of this pileup from Pedro Mata, Jr.

It's expected to take hours to clean up, remove vehicles, and tend to patients. Buses from Hudsonville High School and Max Transit are being sent out to pick up stranded motorists and transport them to Hudsonville High School.
