Freezing Temperatures
Freezing temperatures can be dangerous to any person at any age, especially if that person is under dressed and exposed to extreme cold.
Hypothermia is a condition that occurs when core body temperature drops below 95 degrees Fahrenheit. This can quickly become a medical emergency because the body is losing heat faster than is can produce heat.
There are 5 stages of hypothermia:
- Stage 1 - Mild with a body temperature of 35-32 degrees. Normal or near normal consciousness, shivering.
- Stage 2 - Moderate with a body temperature of 32-28 degrees. Shivering stops, consciousness becomes impaired.
- Stage 3 - Severe with a body temperature of 24-28 degrees.
- Stage 4 - Apparent death with a body temperature of 15-24 degrees.
- Stage 5 - Death from irreversible hypothermia
