I thought it was the 70s but turns out the first video game was created in 1958 by physicist William Higinbotham. It was really Pong before there was Pong. The crazy thing was the game was not invented to make money, just to entertain visitors of the Brookhaven National Laboratory. The game was called Tennis for Two which Higinbotham put together in a couple of days. Pretty impressive.

The first big game to kick off the gaming industry was Ataris Pong. It came out in 1972 and although it was very basic like the original predecessor Tennis for Two, kids and families clambered around the television sets to play and the rest is history.

When Atari dropped Space Invaders things really began to kick in for games with games like Asteroids, Centipede, Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, and Super Mario Brothers, all the way to games of today from PlayStation and Ebox.
