A May Snowstorm in Michigan? Turns Out, It Could Happen

April showers are supposed to bring May flowers but it is also possible a snowstorm could happen in May in Michigan.

April, May, and the first few weeks of June are the Spring time for Michiganders. If you have lived in Michigan long enough, you may remember snow falling in May. I was turkey hunting a few weekends ago near the end of April and it snowed a little where I live in Newaygo County.

It is one thing to get a few snowflakes in May, but is it possible for a full-blown snowstorm? Not only possible but it could happen again.

A May Snowstorm in Michigan, It Could Happen Because it Has Before

In West Michigan in May, people are talking about the tulips for Tulip Time in Holland. Michiganders are mowing their lawns, planting flowers, and enjoying the birds chirping and the smell of Spring in the air.

It is Spring now and the thoughts of Michigan's beaches, bar-b-ques, and outdoor activities are where most people's heads are as they knock out as many projects to free up the Summer. So when was the last time there was a snowstorm in Michigan in May?

You don't have to go back very far when the last snowstorm hit Michigan in May. On May 1, 2023, Marquette Michigan received nearly 2 feet of snow in 24 hours. This was the snowiest May on record for Marquette. It is not uncommon for Marquette and other parts of the Upper Peninsula to get a few flurries in May but last year's storm was the most snow to fall in one day in May in over 50 years.
