UPDATE Friday 4/19/2019 8:15 am:

Several outlets are reporting that Steve Yzerman will be named the Red Wings new General Manager today.

ORIGINAL STORY: The Detroit Red Wings have called a Friday afternoon news conference which will feature team owner Chris Ilitch, general manager Ken Holland, and Red Wings legend Steve Yzerman (pictured above).  That's according to Detroit media outlets.

Yzerman has been in the Tampa Bay Lightning front office since 2010.  He stepped down from his post earlier this season and was a consultant for the team until now.

There has been speculation that Stevie Y, as Yzerman is commonly called, would join the Wings in some front office capacity since he stepped away from the Lightning.  He is one of the greatest players in franchise history, playing for the Red Wings from 1983-2006.  He captained the team to three Stanley Cup championships during his career.

When Joe Louis Arena closed two years ago, Yzerman heard chants of "Come home, Stevie!!!" from the crowd as he spoke to the fans following the Wings final game at the Joe.
