Cooper Rush, the Dallas Cowboys’ New Quarterback, Has Michigan Roots
I get a sweet sense of satisfaction from watching the Dallas Cowboys continue to lose despite playing well most of last season, despite signing Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb to massive, mind-boggling contracts, and despite being "America's Team". The supposedly best team has one of the worst records in the NFL after this week.
Meanwhile, the Detroit Lions are now 8-1 despite being a team of scrappy young players (shameless plug by me). However, there is one player on the Cowboys for whom we should cut some slack: Cooper Rush, the Cowboys' backup quarterback. Why? He was born and raised here in Michigan.

Charlotte to CMU to Dallas
Cooper Rush was born and raised in Charlotte, MI in 1993. He played football all his life, playing for Lansing Catholic in high school. His performance was so impressive that Central Michigan University recruited him.
In college, Rush became something of a CMU Chippewa legend. He ranks second all-time at CMU in career passing yards (11,887), completions (931), and passing touchdowns (88). He sent an NCAA bowl game record after he scored 7 passing touchdowns in the 2014 Bahamas Bowl. So it was a surprise when he went undrafted in 2017.
NFL Career
However, he was signed with the Cowboys as a backup quarterback until 2020 before a short stint with the New York Giants before returning to Dallas in 2021.
Going into yesterday's game against the Eagles he was 5-1 and was generally liked by most of the fanbase and his team, but that may change after going an abysmal 13-of-23 for 45 yards and having two fumbles.
It couldn't have gone worse for an already struggling team, and yes, Rush did terrible last night. But it's still cool seeing a Michigander featured in such a prominent position.
