First-time parents Penelope and Jahari are settling into parenthood, and both mom and baby are reportedly doing well as they spend time bonding behind the scenes.

Pygmy Hippos and Conservation Efforts

This birth isn’t just adorable—it’s a big deal for conservation. Pygmy hippos are endangered, with fewer than 2,500 estimated in the wild. Every new calf is a crucial step toward protecting the species' future, and the zoo’s animal care team is keeping a close eye to make sure mom and baby stay healthy and happy.

Vote to Name the New Hippo

Soon, the little guy will make his public debut—and he needs a name! John Ball Zoo has launched a poll with three options: Hugo, Blitz, and Sapo. Personally, I’m rooting for Hugo—but what do you think?

John Ball Zoo shares their reasoning behind the three names:

  • Hugo - which means smart and spirited
  • Blitz - because the lil' guy is cute and very fast
  • Sapo - Sapo National Park in Liberia is the Pygmy Hippos native habitat

You can cast your vote through October 3 here. Want to give your favorite name a boost? Donations count as extra votes, and all proceeds go toward supporting the calf and pygmy hippo conservation efforts.

The new hippo isn’t the only adorable arrival turning heads at John Ball Zoo. Baby snow leopard Juniper (aka Junie) was born recently as well! See what a cutie she is here. While the zoo hasn’t announced a date for her first public appearance, she’s definitely one to watch.
