With the wintry weather and dangerously cold air covering West Michigan, officials in Ottawa County are urging residents to stay home and stay indoors until Thursday.

Tuesday morning, West Michigan woke up to more snow, colder temperatures, and worse roads than we had seen Monday morning. Multiple freeways have been closed due to accidents and pileups.

It's not just the road conditions that have officials worried, however. The forecasted wind chills for Wednesday range from -25°F and -40°F throughout West Michigan.

Several schools across the area have already cancelled classes for Wednesday, including Grand Rapids Public Schools.

Officials say that if you must venture outside you should dress warmly and in layers, and leave as little skin exposed as possible.

This cold snap will be relatively short-lived, with the highs this weekend expected to be in the mid-30s to near 40 degrees.
