100 Years Strong: Cherry Festival Milestone
The National Cherry Festival in Traverse City, Michigan, is marking its 100th anniversary with the largest celebration in the festival's history.
The Beginning of the National Cherry Festival
It was known as, the "Blessing of the Blossoms," which began in 1910, the tradition grew into a festival officially established in 1925 to promote the local cherry industry and support the region’s agricultural economy. What started as, informal spring blossom-watching ceremonies evolved into a major celebration of the cherry harvest and Traverse City’s reputation as the "Cherry Capital of the World."
What started as an event to highlight the booming cherry orchards in the Grand Traverse region has turned into an 8 day festival that draws over 500,000 visitors annually.
