Myles Kennedy Loses Hope on ‘Devil on the Wall’
The release of Myles Kennedy's long-awaited debut solo album is less than a month away. With folk instrumentation coloring Year of the Tiger, it's a departure from the harder material fans are accustomed to hearing from Kennedy and now the third single, "Devil on the Wall," offers another glimpse at what's ahead.
Musically, the song is upbeat as Kennedy's fierce acoustic strumming accented by jangling chords fuels the energy. Lyrically, however, "Devil on the Wall" is overtly dark as the musician struggles to cope with the reality of his father's loss, looking for an elusive glimmer of hope.
Year of the Tiger is a conceptual album exploring the life of the singer's family following the passing of his father when he was just four years old. "Dad got sick and chose not to go and see a doctor. He died of appendicitis. He died one night in his sleep because it blew up and gangrene went all over. He didn't know it was [appendicitis] because he wouldn't go and see a doctor," Kennedy explained in a recent interview with Eddie Trunk. "But what is interesting is that he got really sick about eight weeks prior. He was in a lot of pain. So there's a theory it might have actually ruptured then. He may have had gangrene actually for quite a while. But mom woke up one morning and he passed away."
The record is due March 9 through Napalm Records and pre-orders can be placed here. Kennedy will be supporting Year of the Tiger with a U.S. tour starting May 2 and will celebrate his 20 year-career with a set spanning all of his work. Head to this location for a list of stops.
