People who think they are "rescuing" baby animals, when actually they are harming them, seems to be a disturbing trend-- In May tourists at Yellowstone National Park put a baby bison in their SUV at Yellowstone because they thought it looked "cold"; the calf had to be euthanized.

Then there's this story about a Montcalm County woman who didn't so much think she was rescuing four baby deer from the wild, but it kind of just seems she wanted them for pets.

She is now facing criminal charges from the Michigan DNR.

MLive reports that the situation started when the woman called the DNR and told them she'd found a fawn whose mother was not around, so she'd taken it.

The DNR officer told her to put it back, saying that a fawn who is left alone is not necessarily abandoned. Sometimes mother deer will let their babies be for a while, because fawns have no scent, so moms often stay away for periods of time so they do not attract predators with their own scent.

The officer never heard back from the woman; but the DNR did  start getting complaints about pictures of a baby deer inside a home posted to Facebook. The woman was questioned but was not truthful. The DNR said she'd given the baby deer to a friend to hide what she'd done.

Then a week later, the suspect took triplet fawns from the woods. Again she lied when questioned by officers.

Department of Natural Resources Sgt. Ron Kimmerly told MLive, "There are a lot of stupid people out there, but this one ... She was told. She just wanted them as pets. ... But four of them, this was blatant."

The woman was investigated and issued four misdemeanor tickets, totalling $575.

The fawns were recovered by the DNR and either released into the wild or taken to a wildlife rehabilitation specialist. One of the fawns died on the way.
