Miracle Puppy Rescued From Ice Flow [Video]

A puppy who spent four days stuck on the ice in the Detroit River in the bitter cold is now recovering.

The 12 to 18-month-old dog has been named Alfonso by his rescuers, who believe he was chased onto the ice-filled river by a coyote. People spotted him out there and tried to save him, but getting to him proved challenging.

But Alfonso’s luck changed when Jude Mead of J&J Marine - a marine construction company in Windsor, Ontario - and his team used an airboat to reach Alfonso. He was immediately taken to Woodhaven Animal Hospital, where Dr. Lucretia Greear is taking care of him.

Alfonso suffered from frostbite on his paw pads and scrotum (YIKES!!), had pancreatitis and was dehydrated, but he’s improving quickly under their care. He was found without a collar or tag and isn’t microchipped, so they’re not sure who he belongs to, but he’s in the right hands now. Dr. Greear says he’s sweet and affectionate and calls him “a miracle walking.”

Since the rescue, several people have claimed Alfonso is their dog, including a Michigan man and a Canadian woman, but neither have been able to provide any concrete proof.
