Michigan’s Muzzleloader Season For Whitetail Deer Has Begun
Michigan offers several ways to hunt deer and one of my favorites is muzzleloader season which kicked off Friday, December 6, 2024.
Black Powder Guns
I always thought black powder guns were invented in America but China invented gunpowder in the 9th century and in the 10th century built the first guns.

What was initially called the hand cannon has evolved from pistols to rifles of war.
Black powder rifles were used in America during the American Revolution and the Civil War. Those same guns were also used to hunt wild game from rabbits, squirrels, deer, to bears, and more depending upon what part of the country you lived in. You only got one shot so you had to make it count because it takes a few moments to reload a black powder gun.

Michigan Muzzleloader Deer Season
Black powder guns have been used to hunt in Michigan since the Civil War but it wasn't until 1975 that there was an official muzzleloader deer season. The DNR created the muzzleloader season to give another opportunity to hunt whitetail deer while adding another way to help control Michigan's deer population.
Many Michigan hunters use some of the early muzzleloader black powder guns to hunt with while others, like myself, use a more modern design with a scope attached. I will say there is nothing like looking at a whitetail deer and then firing off what many hunters refer to as the smoke pole and seeing that cloud of smoke clearing then the deer is down.
Michigan's 2024 muzzleloader season runs December 6 through 15. The season gives hunters one more crack at getting that big buck or an antlerless deer. Depending upon which license you have and the zone you are in determines the number of deer you can harvest. You can find all gun, licensing, and harvest requirements here.
