It's a quickly-growing entertainment spot where both serious golfers and inexperienced players compete and hit microchipped golf balls at a high-tech driving range.

Topgolf is opening its first location in Michigan on Friday.

Topgolf's newest location is in Auburn Hills at 500 Great Lakes Crossing Drive.

The three-level, 65,000-square-foot venue becomes Topgolf's 51st location. The levels include over 100 climate-controlled hitting bays which can be rented and reserved, similar to reserving a bowling lane.

Once players begin hitting golf balls, the microchipped balls instantly score themselves and show the accuracy and distance of shots on a TV screen in the hitting bay as players compete.

Costs add up quick.

Bays can be reserved ahead of time for a price based on the day and time. Prices go up to $50. Hitting bays are also available with no reservation fee by putting your name on a waiting list. Topgolf says the location will open to the public at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 7, but reservations at the Auburn Hills location will not go live until Monday, Dec. 10.

All players must have a membership card which may be purchased for $5.

Then you have to pay for your time playing. Price is the same regardless of the number of players in a hitting bay. $25 per hour from open until noon, $35 per hour from noon until 5:00 p.m., and $45 per hour from 5:00 p.m. until close. Up to six people can play at one time in a bay, while eight people may be in a bay at a time.

Food and drinks are available too.

You can bring your own golf clubs if you'd like or Topgolf has clubs available.

The hours at the Auburn Hills location are:

  • Sunday - Thursday: 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 p.m.
  • Friday - Saturday: 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 a.m.

If you are Christmas shopping for a golfer this year, you've just found a simple way to cross another person off of your shopping list.
