Michigan was granted statehood on January 26, 1837. The first settlers dated back to 1668, in Sault Ste. Marie. So people lived in what would later be called Michigan for nearly 169 years. They were called settlers, the Michigander vs Michigainian battle had not begun yet.

It wasn't until around 1845 that the terms Michigander and Michiganian were used in print to describe who is from or lives in Michigan. There have been names like Michiganer, Michiganite, Michiganese, Michigine, and Michigoose (referring to a female).

Michigan governors have used either Michigainian like Governor John Engler did during his term. Governor Gretchen Whitmer uses Michigander. Michigainian and Michigander are the two most people settle on but this battle has continued for nearly 200 years.
