If you've ever driven across the Upper Peninsula during the summer, you know that Michigan is a fantastic state for road trips.  So, it was no surprise when our friends at WalletHub just released their list of 2021’s Best & Worst States for Summer Road Trips and Michigan ranked 9th overall.

For the most part, the rankings make sense, but there are a few states that I think should have been ranked differently.  So, let's take a look at the 10 best and worst states for summer road trips.

  2. Texas
  3. Louisiana
  4. Maine
  5. North Carolina
  6. Minnesota
  7. Utah
  8. Illinois
  9. Michigan
  10. Wisconsin

10 Worst States For Summer Road Trips

The states that I have issue with are Illinois, Hawaii, and of course Michigan.  First off, what the heck is there to do and see in Illinois besides Chicago?  It should totally be ranked lower than Michigan.  And how is Hawaii not last on the list?  You can't road trip on islands...  And then Michigan should be at the top of the list because of Northern Michigan, the Mackinac Bridge, and the UP.  Duh.

One interesting fact that WalletHub found was that Michigan has the 4th lowest average cost for car repairs in the country.

You can see how the rest of the states rank by using the interactive map below, or checking out the original article on WalletHub.com.

The survey ranked the states based on 3 key dimensions: Cost, safety, and activities.  Each of those dimensions were further broken down into a few dozen metrics to determine the rankings.
