I am an unashamed space nerd. I have been since I was a kid and it has only expanded as I've gotten older. I'm currently moving into a new place and was startled when three of my largest pieces of decor were:

  • A 1979 moon phases graphic from National Geographic
  • Showing how the Earth looks during each season
  • The scale of the solar system and the sizes of the planets compared to each

Basically, I really need to diversify. With all this in mind, I tend to pay extra attention to the exciting* moon events throughout the year. This year won't have as many special events as last year, but we do have a total lunar eclipse and two super full moons to look forward to.

2025 Lunar Eclipse

Last year much of the country was treated to an exceedingly rare total solar eclipse where the sun was completely blocked out by the moon for a short period, turning day into night. That won't happen again in most of our lifetimes (2099).

However, Michigan will get a far more common total lunar eclipse this year, and we won't have to wait too long for it. On March 13th, the lunar eclipse will be visible to the entire country from 11:57 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. on Friday morning (March 14th). The lunar eclipse is referred to as a 'blood moon' due to its red appear.

Supermoons

Michigan will also witness two "super full moons" to end the year. A supermoon is a full moon that is unusually bright due to its close proximity to the Earth during that time. These Super Full Moons will take place on November 5th and December 4th. While there are super new moons, they are not visible.
