Michigan Man Faces Backlash For Posting Photos of Prosthetics for Transgender People and Cancer Survivors on Facebook
Michigan native Michael Wilson is fighting to keep his Facebook page up and functioning after facing backlash from the social network.
Wilson works for RealDoll, and their offshoot, RealGurl. RealGurl produces prosthetic breasts for transgender women and breast cancer survivors, as well as shorts for transgender women.
Wilson has been posting photos of his work on Facebook, and they have been removed after being deemed "offensive". In a video, which you can see below, Wilson addressed what has been happening, and says that he won't stop posting photos of his work, even though he's sure it will end up getting him banned entirely.
Wilson says that while the pieces that he creates (and posts photos of) are lifelike, they're not pornographic. The pieces that are created for RealGurl are used by transgender women who can't afford top or bottom surgery, and breast cancer survivors who have undergone mastectomies.
When I asked Wilson why he doesn't intend to stop, he said,
I won't stop because it's not real. And even if it was, so what? I mean, we all have these parts of the anatomy or have at least seen them before. We are all humans. Our anatomy is a big part of that. We shouldn't be ashamed of it.
I also believe that the communities to which our company caters to are already disenfranchised enough. What some of customers go through during transitions is no joke. By posting photographs on social media it's a small way to help people realize that these transitions they go through are not something that needs to be hidden and that I at the very least support them.
I'm so tired of society being afraid of sexuality. In all of its forms. As a country we used to be innovative rebels, now we are frightened conservative sheep. If posting pictures of faux anatomy helps break us free even in the smallest amount, I think that it's worth it.
Not to mention, what we do here is art. Every one of my team members are trained artists. We take pride in our work. We just work in medium of nude form. And artists have for a long time been demonized for their work. But, that doesn't make it right.
