Michigan GM Plant Planning Mass Layoffs
This is not the news GM employees in Michigan wanted to hear before the holidays. Mlive reports that the GM Detroit Hamtramck plant is preparing for mass layoffs.
The layoffs are scheduled for February 28th, 2020. Both hourly and salary employees will get the axe, with a grand total of 814 workers being affected. Most of the workers being laid off are production workers represented by the UAW.
This is a hard blow to the workers of Michigan, considering the strike which took place back in September where 50,000 workers represented by the UAW walked out on the job, fighting for pay equality. Workers in Hamtramck assemble the Chevrolet Impala and Cadillac CT6. The final production date of both models was set for January but due to the strike, it has been extended to February 28.
The good side of the news, it sounds like employees will be offered jobs at other plants starting in January. This comes as part of the companies "retooling" but there is no promise that all of them will be able to land those jobs, some of which are all the way in Ohio... yeah no thanks.
The "retooling" GM is talking about is a $3 billion investment, assumed to create over 2,000 new jobs. A 2019 agreement with GM and the UAW specifies the investment is being utilized for electric truck and van assembly without mentions as to what parts or products will be manufactured at the facility.
