Winter in Michigan has a way of making everyone feel a little cooped up. Cabin fever sets in, the days feel long, and getting outside can feel like a chore. That’s exactly why Michigan’s Free Fishing Weekend is such a welcome break. Get out, get some fresh air, and hopefully catch something tasty!

Michigan's Free Winter Fishing Weekend 2026

This year, the Winter Free Fishing Weekend takes place over Valentine's Day weekend: Saturday, February 14 through Sunday, February 15, 2026. For two full days, both residents and visitors can fish without buying a license. Keep in mind though, all other fishing regulations still apply.

There’s another perk, too!

During Free Fishing Weekend, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources waives the Recreation Passport fee. That means free vehicle entry to all 103 Michigan state parks and access to more than 1,300 DNR-managed boating access sites across the state.

Michigan has held Free Fishing Weekend every year since 1986 as a way to encourage people to experience the state’s incredible fishing opportunities and diverse aquatic resources. Whether you’re an experienced angler or someone who hasn’t picked up a rod in years, it’s an easy way to reconnect with the outdoors.

Before heading out, it’s important to prepare for changing winter conditions. Ice safety is especially critical this time of year, and the DNR recommends checking conditions and reviewing safety tips before going.

Already have a fishing license? This weekend is a great opportunity to bring along someone new and introduce them to the sport.

Plan Ahead For Summer

If you enjoy it, mark your calendar for the Summer Free Fishing Weekend on June 13 and 14, 2026, which lines up with Michigan’s popular “Three Free” weekend. During that time, residents and nonresidents can grab a fishing rod, ride the off-road trails and visit state parks and boating access sites—all free of charge.
