Man Dead in Apparent Suicide From Mackinac Bridge

Deaths Involved With the Mackinac Bridge

Five workers lost their lives during the construction of the Mackinac Bridge. The fatalities occurred in several different incidents, including a driving accident, a fall, a drowning, and two separate falls from temporary catwalks. Since the bridge opened in 1957, only two vehicles have gone over its railings. While records of construction and automobile accidents are well-documented, data on suicides related to the bridge are incomplete and not well maintained.

It’s understandable that suicides involving the Mackinac Bridge are not widely publicized, as sharing such information could unintentionally encourage others to attempt the same. In my experience working in downtown Grand Rapids, there have been two incidents in the past seven years where individuals jumped from the parking garage across the street from our building. Neither event was covered by the news, likely as a way to prevent copycat attempts, a quiet but meaningful form of suicide prevention.

There have been roughly a dozen suicides by people jumping off the Mackinac Bridge as of 2013. Three of those occurred in 2007.

Man Killed In Apparent Suicide At Mackinac Bridge

According to WLUC TV6, the Mackinac County Sheriff's Office confirmed one person is dead after a person jumped off and died due to the injuries. Authorities are investigating the incident as a possible suicide.

The Macomb County Scanner Facebook page posted a man had jumped from the north pier of Mackinac Bridge with the below timeline of the incident:

• 1:15 pm - Report from the Mackinac Bridge. Male jumped off the bridge and is in the water.
• 1:16 pm - Possible seen moving in the water.
• 1:19 pm - No sightings of the male now.
• 1:20 pm - There is a witness that saw this happen.
• 1:22 pm - Victim is on a boat being taken to a dock they need EMS to meet them at the dock.
