Monday night, July 17th, Lamb of God and Behemoth descended upon Grand Rapids for a ferocious metal assault at 20 Monroe Live. Or would it be ascended, with music from Hell? They also brought along a great local metal band called Withhold the Blood!

I'm a metalhead. I love the volume, I love the sound of the guitars, and the variety and depth of the music. You can pretty much get away with anything within the genre. There's so much stuff out there, and so much variety. Lamb of God, Behemoth, and Withhold the Blood are but a few bands within the "extreme metal" category. But different kinds, all three.

I missed the beginning of Withhold the Blood, but heard the last few songs, and they represent metal here in Michigan really well! Two guitars, screaming vocals, pounding drums. These guys are pretty good, and I look forward to seeing them around the area again. I'll definitely go check them out some more.

Then, the band I've been waiting to see for a long time now. Behemoth! I've been a fan of this black/death metal band from Poland for quite a long time now, and just haven't had an opportunity for a show. They had a short set, but didn't disappoint. Even with a fill-in drummer. (Inferno is back home for the birth of his second child.) The fill-in drummer used to be in Job for a Cowboy, so he's no slouch, but Inferno's drum parts are hard and an endurance test.

They didn't have time to play some of the songs I wanted to see, but "Ov Fire and the Void" is one I love, and was great to hear. "Slaves Shall Serve" kicks ass, too, but they didn't have the space for it.

Great set, anyway, very intense band, with extremely intense music. Which you can check out below.

Then, Lamb of God hit the stage. I've been a recent convert to Lamb of God. I don't know why it took me so long to get into the band, but I have, and I've seen them four or five times already. A couple times before I was really into them. Great band. They're really tight, and the engine that is Chris Adler is solid.

His work with Megadeth was pretty awesome, too.

They even dedicated a song to Two Beard sandwiches, because "they're really f*****g good". Which kicked ass. I've got "Laid to Rest", and "Ruin" for you, enjoy!
