Kentwood Schools Will Require Everyone to Wear Masks Indoors

Kentwood Public Schools is the latest district in West Michigan to issue a mask mandate.

With back-to-school quickly approaching, schools are preparing for another year with how to navigate through COVID-19. The CDC and MDHHS have already recommended universal masking and many districts are following through.

On Tuesday, Kentwood's Superintendent sent a letter home to parents regarding their updated policy which says that staff, students, and visitors will be required to wear masks when inside their buildings. The only exceptions will be those with a documented/proven medical condition. The mask requirement will also apply to transportation vehicles such as school busses.

The letter also states the district's plans to keep everyone safe as they get ready for full in-person learning. This incudes:

Increased ventilations throughout buildings
Increased nurse staff
Ongoing deep cleaning
Regular communication with the Kent County health department

More than 85% of their staff is currently vaccinated and KPS will encourage vaccination for students 12 and up. They've teamed with Metro Health to offer vaccine clinics for students and their families. They will be holding their next one at the administration building on Friday, August 27.

Currently, 41% of Kentwood students ages 12-17 are vaccinated and 67% of people (16 and up) in the community have gotten their COVID shot.

KPS says they will update their guidelines in accordance with the health department and will keep constant communication with parents and students.

Kentwood's first day of school is Monday, August 23rd.
