
Tool Shed Thefts On The Rise In Kent County
The Kent County Sheriff’s Office is once again warning residents about an increase in thefts—and now the problem is cropping up in a different part of the county.

Not long ago, we shared news of a spike in vehicle thefts, thefts from vehicles, and break-ins at construction sites, especially in southern areas like Byron, Caledonia, and Gaines Townships. Now, similar crimes are being reported farther north.

Where Are the Thefts Happening?
In a recent Community Alert on Facebook, the Sheriff’s Office says they’ve received multiple reports of tool shed break-ins in Plainfield Township, particularly in neighborhoods near Post Drive and US-131.
What Are Thieves Targeting?
Thieves seem to be targeting tools and equipment—especially when they’re stored in unlocked or unsecured sheds, garages, or outbuildings.

How to Protect Your Property
To help keep your property safe, police recommend:
- Locking all sheds, garages, and outbuildings.
- Installing motion-activated lights or security cameras if possible.
- Engraving your name or a unique ID on tools to help recover them if stolen.
- Keeping ladders, tools, and other equipment out of sight so they can’t be used in a break-in.
- Reporting any suspicious people or vehicles in your neighborhood.
