Kent County Man Dies from West Nile Virus
Last week, Michigan health officials confirmed eight cases of West Nile virus so far this year, including one in Kent County.
Wood TV 8 reports that an 80-year-old man in Kent County passed away over the weekend from complications from the virus. The man's name has not been released at this time.
This is the first death connected to West Nile in Kent County since 2012, and the second death statewide this year. The first case resulting in death in 2018 occurred in Wayne County.
According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, August is the peak month for West Nile Virus.
A person at any age can be affected by West Nile Virus, but people over 60 are more likely to get the more severe form of the illness. MDHSS says that people who work or play outdoors are more at risk.
While there is no cure for WNV, MDHHS suggests these ways to protect yourself:
- Use insect repellents containing DEET
- Wear long sleeves and pants
- Use screens on windows and doors
- Remove standing water in or outside of your home
