Even if you’ve been a dozen times, this year is going to feel totally different. Because while the island looks quiet in the winter, behind the scenes, it’s been full-on hustle mode.
Winter Construction In The Straits of Mackinac
We’re talking construction crews coming and going, supplies shipped in by boat, then by plane once the Straits froze over, and everything hauled across the island the old-school way, by horse-drawn drays. And now, all that work is about to pay off in a big way.

A few years ago I documented the winter renovation of the Ester Williams pool at The Grand Hotel, and it was and impressive feat. Now, according to MLive, the 2026 season is bringing a wave of new experiences. Let’s start with food, because that’s where a lot of people are headed first.
New Restaurants and Dining Experiences on Mackinac Island
Mackinac Island is leveling up its dining scene with everything from a brand-new afternoon tea experience at the Island House Hotel to a new pizza spot inside Mission Point Resort. There’s also a brand-new piano bar, a reimagined Main Street restaurant, and even more outdoor dining and live entertainment popping up this summer.

And if you’re staying overnight, you’ll notice the upgrades. The Grand Hotel has redesigned spaces and renovated suites, while spots like the Chippewa Hotel and Harbour View Inn are rolling out fresh new looks for guests.

Want something new to do? Hit the water with updated cruise routes, or let the kids go all-in on a treasure hunt adventure across the island. Bottom line, this isn’t just another season on Mackinac Island. It’s a full refresh.
