Is something a bit nefarious going at Northern Michigan University in Marquette? The entire university is concerned.

It's about the sauna facilities in the PEIF, Physical Educational Instructional Facility, at the university.

Northern Michigan University issued a closure notice effective this past Tuesday, May 5.

The Rec Center at NMU seems to be very cool. It houses a two-level recreation center, with a climbing wall, weight room, cardiovascular area, two basketball courts, two lounge areas, and a spinning room. It has six racquetball courts, a golf simulator, a dance studio, athletic training facilities, locker rooms, and classrooms, as well as an auxiliary gym that teams use for practice.

But, something seems to be up with the saunas, and they are now closed.

Northern Michigan posted on their Facebook page:

NMU Rec Sports will be permanently closing the sauna facilities located within the PEIF’s locker rooms, effective May 5, 2026.This decision follows a comprehensive evaluation of the saunas’ operating and safety conditions. While the saunas have been a popular amenity, ongoing concerns and incidents related to them have made it increasingly difficult to ensure a safe, clean, and secure environment.

Hmm, what's really up here?

What caught my eye was the phrase "ongoing concerns and incidents." Somehow, that doesn't sound good. What incidents? What were they?

Will we ever know? Not sure because Northern Michigan University is pretty tight-lipped about the whole thing.

We do know that after an investigation, they decided to shut them down in concern for the safety of students.

Seems like a good move, NMU!
