Fast Food, Faster Delivery: Baby Born at Michigan McDonald’s
As moms, we’ve all had those pregnancy cravings that send us on a late-night run for fries, nuggets, or maybe even a McFlurry.
But for one West Michigan family, a late-night McDonald’s stop turned into so much more than a snack run.
Early last Monday morning in Kalamazoo County, Alyce and Kevin Rotunda welcomed their fourth child, right in a McDonald’s parking lot just off of US-131 in Schoolcraft.
Alyce, a Centreville mom, had already been through three complicated deliveries. With her fourth, she was planning to deliver safely at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo.
Just a day before the special delivery, she made the 45-minute drive only to be told it was a false alarm. But by Sunday night, her contractions came back stronger than ever and she knew it was time to go.
Kevin knew they couldn’t waste a second. He pushed their drive to the limit, flying toward the hospital at 100 mph. But it was clear they weren’t going to make it. That’s when at around 3 am, they pulled into that quiet McDonald’s lot on the edge of Schoolcraft and dialed 911.
Within minutes, a Schoolcraft officer arrived and shined a spotlight on them, but Alyce couldn’t wait any longer for a hospital bed, or even the asphalt. Standing up in the parking lot, she gave birth as Kevin caught their daughter.Instead of a Happy Meal that morning, they got a baby girl.
Baby Matilda arrived weighing 7 pounds, 14 ounces. Her official birthplace? The Schoolcraft McDonald’s address. According to a report from WOOD8, Family members are already calling her nicknames like McTilda, McTilly, and of course, Nugget.
The McDonald’s crew didn’t even know what happened until later that morning, when the restaurant opened to a freshly cleaned parking lot and a wild story.
For the Rotundas, though, it’s less about the unusual location and more about the blessing. Alyce, who also celebrated her own birthday that day, is just grateful everything went smoothly.
And as for their little nugget Matilda? Let’s just say her parents are lovin’ her.
