Demand Spikes for Salvation Army Christmas Assistance in Kent County
With Christmas just around the corner, the Salvation Army in Kent County is facing one of its most challenging holiday seasons in recent memory. The need for help in West Michigan and beyond is growing fast, and the resources to meet it haven’t quite caught up yet.
As of this week, the Salvation Army has raised just 38 percent of its $1.45 million Christmas Campaign goal. At the same time, the number of families asking for help has jumped by more than 11 percent compared to last year. That combination has created real pressure as they’re working to make sure no one falls through the cracks during the holidays.
Much of the increased demand comes down to the same things many West Michigan families are feeling every day. Higher prices, tighter budgets, and unexpected expenses have pushed people to ask for help sooner, and in greater numbers, than ever before.
This year alone, the Salvation Army expanded its assistance program by adding 200 more spots for families in need. Even then, those additional openings filled up earlier than they did last year, a clear sign that the struggle is hitting closer to home for a lot of people.
This week is a big time to step in and be a last minute Christmas hero with a donation to help cover their costs, if you’re able.
Through the Angel Tree program, the Salvation Army will distribute toys and gift cards to 1,900 families across Kent County on Tuesday morning. It’s a massive operation, and one that brings some much-needed relief and joy to households that are trying their best to make Christmas feel normal for their kids.
The message from the Salvation Army is simple: Whether it’s a donation, volunteering time, or simply spreading the word, every bit helps bridge the gap between where things stand now and making sure thousands of families can still experience a warm, hopeful Christmas here in Kent County.
