I’m Not Buying That He’s Really Running For Office, But Here’s Where Kid Rock Stands On Some Issues
The big news this week was the announcement on Twitter that Detroit rocker Kid Rock may be into running for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Debbie Stabenow in 2018.
So what would a Kid Rock candidacy look like?
While the kidrockforsenate.com site is owned by his merchandising arm*, Warner Brothers, and he's released two online singles since his 'announcement', Kid Rock (real name: Bob Ritchie) has doubled down on his declaration that this Senate run is real and not a publicity stunt to pump up album sales.
Kid Rock is really Ritchie's on stage persona, so I'm not sure culling his lyrics and interviews is a way to determine what his campaign platform would look like, but they indicate a very interesting point of view.
A fiscal conservative and declared libertarian, Rock is on the record as being personally against abortion and gay marriage, but not interested in pursuing changing the laws on either of those activities.
"I am no fan of abortion, but it’s not up to a man to tell a woman what to do. As an ordained minister I don’t look forward to marrying gay people, but I’m not opposed to it," Rock told the Guardian in 2015.
In politics and society, if you’re in the social justice movement to change people’s minds, you’re going to fail. If someone is uncomfortable with trans-people, gay people or abortion, shouting at them through a loud speaker that they’re a bad person probably isn’t going to change minds, but you can convince them it’s okay to be uncomfortable AND okay with the law.
In that same Guardian interview Rock declares being a grandfather at 43 helps his 'redneck street cred', as if growing up in a well-to-do Detroit suburb in a wealthy family is any kind of 'street cred'.
More like 'cul-de-sac cred', but who am I to judge? He's very upfront about it: "I’ve made a fuck-ton of money, but I’ve never made a dishonest dollar. I try to do right by the people around me."
So, if you're sick and tired of the bulls**, it looks like you may have some options in 2018. But, then again I've already uncovered some bullsh** on Kid's part (see footnote below), so always remember, bullsh** is what we now live in. Where there's bullsh**, there's a politician not far away, no matter how refreshing he tries to be.
* Kid Rock yesterday said the press was wrong and a simple fact check would reveal he's not signed to Warner Bros. records, so I checked, and they ARE still his merchandising partner, and they DO own the web site.
