I Heard Something In The Woods I’ve Never Heard Before
I have been going into the woods for many years, but this morning I heard something I have never heard before.
Archery season for whitetail deer in Michigan started on October 1. I have went out to hunt the two first mornings of the season so far.
I have a little bit of property to hunt on but my favorite stand is a bit of a walk.
I managed to cut a little path through a small section of the cornfield that is on my property in order to try and not spook the deer. So far I am 0 for 2 on that. I have jumped deer both mornings on the way out to my stand and that is not good.
I used my ATV to flatten down the weeds along the backside of the cornfield all the way to one of my tree stands. One reason I did this was, in the morning things are usually wet and if I didn't knock down those weeds I would have been soaked by the time I would get to my spot. Another reason was to try and not cross the path of the larger deer that are entering the backside of the cornfield.
After two days of hunting in the morning, I have realized the deer have been liking to bed down in the field behind the corn so I'm not sure there is an effective way to get out there without disturbing the deer. I am going to have to figure something out because there are not many evenings that I will be able to hunt because of work.
This morning I jumped a few does on the way who were laying in front of one of my other stands that I put out this year. After that happened, I wasn't worried about jumping anymore. I was wrong again.
Just before I got to the end of the cornfield I jumped a nice buck and that is never good news but I also jumped something else at the same time.
After the deer exploded right under the stand I was heading to, something moved in front of me. Now after getting a black bear on my trail camera last week, I am being a little more careful on how I enter and leave my stand while its still dark.
Well a black blob began to move right in front of me and at first I thought...I sure hope this is not a bear cub. It wasn't, it was a porcupine but it did startle me because I was focused on the deer that just jumped up. That is when I heard a sound that I have never heard before.
I felt something under my boot moving and I look down and there was a second porcupine squealing at me because I'm standing on its foot. I have to admit, I also made a sound of surprise right back at it. I thought for sure it was going to fill my leg with quills but it just mosied off after I lifted my boot and seemed just fine.
I had never seen any live porcupines before I moved into the place I have now, but for the year and half I have been there I have seen a few here and there but had never heard one make a sound until this morning.
If you have never heard a porcupine before, check out the video below and give it a listen because that is exactly what they sound like because that is what I heard this morning.
