The Day Michigan Was Ravaged By Hurricane Carla In 1961

As crazy as this statement is going to sound, Michigan is pretty fortunate when it comes to severe weather. Sure, Michiganders deal with blizzards and freezing temperatures during winter, but generally, we don't have too much to worry about. A tornado here and there (except this year, which is reaching a record), and a small earthquake every few years. But thankfully, due to Michigan's location, we never have to deal with destructive hurricanes.

Well, rarely. There have been a few instances where severe hurricanes have made their way to Michigan, dumping loads of rain and bringing powerful winds with them, most recently in 2024 with Hurricane Beryl. But the next worst hurricane came way back in 1961 when Grand Rapids experienced some heavy rainfall in a very short time.

Hurricane Carla, 64 Years Later

Hurricane Carla made landfall in 1961 on the Texas coast as a Category 4 hurricane, with sustained winds averaging a whopping 130 miles per hour. This makes Carla the 9th-worst hurricane to hit the US since 1851. Hurricanes tend to die when they lose access to a body of water, but this storm stayed dangerous even as it entered the Great Lakes and into parts of Canada.

Hurricane Carla's Impact on Michigan

Much of West Michigan received precipitation from Carla, but the worst-hit areas were Boyne Falls (which had 6.07 inches of rainfall), Traverse City (which had a dam washout), and Grand Rapids. In total, 8 inches of precipitation fell across Michigan in 12 hours, making it the 2nd wettest tropical cyclone in Michigan history (second only to Hurricane Beryl last year).

While it is rare for Michigan to experience weather of this type, it does happen. Thankfully, the damage is usually nowhere near the area of the initial landfall.
