I remember when cops first started driving in Dodge Chargers and thinking that was a pretty sweet ride but this is beyond cool.

The City of Holland has approved purchasing Teslas for their police officers. The Holland Sentinel says the city is looking to make the change from traditional engines to hybrids and electric car options.

The city chose to go with the Tesla Model 3 after comparing it to the Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Bolt, which are also electric. The Tesla is obviously the more expensive option with a price tag over $49,000. However, Holland's financial director said at the council meeting they chose it because

...its superior performance on test drives, safety rating, warranty and resale value, for example — put it ahead of the city’s other electric options.

It also doesn't hurt that the Tesla is the sexiest looking one out of the three.

Holland will only be purchasing one Tesla as of right now as a test run to see its feasibility before completely updating their fleet. The city's mayor expects that the money they'll be saving in gas alone will pay off any additional costs.

The Tesla will be driven by detectives with the Holland Department of Public Safety and will be driven to crime scenes and to conduct interviews. Considering the Tesla has a max speed of 162mph, I'd love to see that in a high-speed chase.

Having officers drive in an electric car is part of the city's plan to lower carbon emissions. They've already approved the purchase of three Ford Escape hybrids for their officers and Community and Neighborhood Services inspectors to drive, per Holland Sentinel.

While I cannot confirm it, after doing a little searching, I believe Holland will be the first city in Michigan to have their officers cruising in a Tesla.

The Tesla Model 3 is a dual motor all-wheel drive car that goes from 0-60mph in 3.2 seconds and can travel for 299 miles on a full charge.
